What Does it Cost to Be the Best?
|
I've always set high expectations for myself and given my all. Yet, there are some things I cannot do alone. I need the support of my family, friends, coach, teammates and yes, the support of my community to keep progressing. My goal is to be the first US women's hammer thrower medalist by London 2012. Become a part of my journey and success.

Being the best requires the best facilities, training, and
coaching
Being the best requires I stay healthy through health
insurance and to maintain/sustain with regular chiro/
massage/ ART/ acupuncture.
Being the best requires travel and funding
travel/hotel/food for track season in US and Europe.
Most athletes I compete against are funded by
sponsors, their government, endorsements, etc and
don't worry about day to day living expenses.
To be a fully funded athlete training full-time with no
limitations, no cutting costs, staying completely healthy,
and free to travel where ever I needed, surrounded by
the best coaching/training/facilities, it would cost near
$30,000 a year.
The people I compete against from other countries are
usually fully funded by their government or the
governing body of their sport. Currently, I am not fully
funded by the government, not the USOC, or US track
and field.
All athlete's need and depend on sponsors (private,
business, shoe, etc) in one form or another to help with
costs. Currently, I do not have any shoe contracts or
major sponsors to help offset costs of training.
The budget is an ideal situation. In reality, I do not
have $30,000 so there are many sacrifices made in
recovery, working multiple jobs at times, not traveling,
not purchasing gear/clothing, not having basic health
insurance, etc. You learn to become very creative on a
small budget... lol
